EcosystemsOur highest mission is to protect the ecosystems Rachel Carson loved and wrote into her sphere of advocacy. Our work centers around keeping our Water, Coasts and Oceans free from pollution; protecting the essential role of Birds and Pollinators in terrestrial ecosystems, and fighting for the flourishing of our Wildlife and Endangered Species.
“In every outthrust headland, in every curving beach, in every grain of sand there is the story of the earth.” –Rachel Carson
Forests and LandAmerica’s forests, mountains, and prairies are among our greatest resources. Rachel Carson believed that we have a duty to protect these finite, invaluable ecosystems, not only for the joy and wonder they provide us but for their vast array of climate and ecological benefits. We are determined to end rampant deforestation from Industrial-scale Wood Pellet operations in the American South and Pacific Northwest, on top of the community harms and carbon emissions their plants create. We are also determined to protect Public Lands and Boreal Forests from industry encroachment.
“I have had many precious moments in these woods, and this past fall as I walked there the feeling became overwhelming that something must be done.” –Rachel Carson
Polluter AccountabilityClimate change represents an existential threat to humanity and the planet. It’s time to start holding big polluters accountable for their reckless emissions and knowing endangerment of public health for decades. We actively lead Make Polluters Pay and Anti-Greenwashing (false solutions) campaigns against the worst industry culprits. Throughout our work, we also center Climate and Racial Justice, Renewable Energy, and Public Health as priorities in a truly just energy transition.
“The modern world worships the gods of speed and quantity, and of the quick and easy profit, and out of this idolatry monstrous evils have arisen.”
–Rachel Carson, Animal Machines
Pesticides and ToxicsWe keep the spirit of “Silent Spring” alive and protect the informed public from the harms of pesticides, petrochemicals, and toxics. We staunchly oppose Pesticide Preemption efforts led by industry lobbyists hoping to unravel state and local pesticide regulations, and are fighting in Congress to enshrine Health Justice for Families, Children, and Farmworkers exposed to chemical pesticides. We promote Alternatives to Pesticides and Household Toxics, not only for personal consumer protection, but as evidence-backed policy solutions to reform our food system.
“Why should we tolerate a diet of weak poisons, a home in insipid surroundings…Who would want to live in a world which is just not quite fatal?”
–Rachel Carson, Silent Spring
DemocracyAt the heart of our work is a drive to uphold democracy in the United States. We recognize that all advocacy in Rachel Carson’s legacy must rest on a free, just, and participatory democratic system. We lead nonpartisan campaigns in Voting Rights and Voter Education to serve this purpose. Our work concurrently focuses on Peace and Violence Prevention, Nuclear Disarmament, and Defense of the Constitution, three values central to Rachel Carson alongside her environmental leadership.
“Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?”
–Rachel Carson, Silent Spring
