I am writing in support of the EPA’s proposal for New Carbon Pollution Standards for Fossil Fuel-Fired Power Plants. Fossil fuel emissions are the leading cause of climate change. New technologies have made updated pollution standards achievable for all power plants. The EPA’s proposal would spur the adoption of these technologies, making more rapid change to lower carbon emissions. To combat climate change, we must use all our resources and innovations to reduce emissions and protect the environment.

The energy sector is one of the largest threats to human and environmental health. Annually, fossil fuel pollution causes around 350,000 premature deaths and costs around $886 billion in health impacts. The EPA’s new carbon pollution regulations are a step in the right direction to protect public health and the climate as seen in the projected $85 billion in benefits.

Because of proximity to power plants and systemic discrimination, low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately affected by fossil fuel-fired power plant pollution. This proposal delivers on the Biden-Harris administration’s Executive Order to Revitalize Our Nation’s Commitment to Environmental Justice for All, which pledged to better protect overburdened communities from pollution and environmental harm. The EPA and energy sector can have a hand in combating social inequality as well as carbon pollution through this proposal.

Through rigorous analysis, the EPA asserts that these new regulations will protect the environment, mitigate climate change, enhance public health, and maintain the current trajectory of energy market prices. The proposal gives power plants ample time to adopt these new clean technologies while still addressing pollution and climate change in a timely manner. These regulations would be the first ever in the US to oversee existing power plants’ emissions, so if passed, the regulations will indicate a greener and healthier future for all of the United States. Please urgently enact these new carbon pollution standards for the fossil fuel-fired power plants in order to protect our Earth and the health of our communities.

Sincerely,
